The Evolution of MEI
Doctor-founded MEI Pioneers a New Industry
MEI's origins as a doctor-founded firm provide a clue as why it offers more to its
clients.
Even before 1984, there were already physicians who treated IMEs as a sideline,
of course, but they were not trained in legal matters. Maybe they lacked in their
ability to generate clear, well-organized reports. Or, perhaps they were reluctant
to subject themselves to depositions or court appearances where they might face
challenges to their integrity and veracity.
Drs. Michael Davis and Thomas Litman were able to use their standing in the medical
community as board certified orthopedic surgeons to recruit additional respected
doctors. By emphasizing training, board certification and expertise they changed
perceptions and created a new standard in an emerging industry.
In 1984, they rented a small space in their medical building, hired two employees
and MEI was born.
Client-orientation Ensures Staying Power
The key to MEI's early success was the guidance provided by the leadership of two
doctors. They elevated the quality of IMEs by recognizing the needs, strengths,
preconceptions, and, yes, weaknesses of physicians.
With the guidance of MEI, fellow doctors developed the skills that met the needs
of insurance examiners and attorneys. The results of the evaluation were now dictated
promptly. Reports were thorough, well-conceived and well-organized. All questions
were answered, and the conclusions were valid and supported by the records and examination.
Another important part of this groundbreaking approach was that doctors treated
claimants with the same kindness, consideration and respect they would give their
own patients. Their approach called for a complete history, thorough examination
and review of available records and imaging studies.
The overriding objective was - and still is - to provide an honest, unbiased, and
complete evaluation.
